Kitchen Renovation: Where Do I Start?

What Are The Priorities?

Know your budget.  If you can budget to renovate your kitchen terrific, but sometimes your budget won't allow you to get the kitchen of your dreams in one go!  If this is the case you can do it in steps.

Start with:

Layout: Need to create that open floor plan? Or add an island? Rearrange the flow?

Infrastructure: Framing, subfloor, windows, plumbing, and electrical are the basics that have to be done first before you bring in the shiny new appliances and cabinetry.

Cabinets: Go for quality construction and interior finishes such as hinges and glides that stand up to every day use year after year. Get as many as you can budget for and drawers are more functional than standard base cabinets.

Countertops: Demoing old countertops can cause damage to existing cabinetry and plumbing. Evaluate your countertop situation and know the risks associated with changing out countertops.

Things You Can Wait For:

New Light Fixtures:  Wait to add that pricey new light. Just recycle an old one until you can source the right feature light for your budget. Once the electrician has wired it you can replace with a new one yourself relatively easily.

New Appliances: Unless you are changing the size or configuration, your existing appliances can work well until you get that tax return cheque!

Designer Faucet: You can get a decent faucet for about $150 that can tide you over for months or several years. The key thing to keep in mind is that the drill holes match the configuration of your future option in the countertop.

Backsplash:  You can save some money by simply painting the walls with a semigloss paint that is scrubbable. This buys you some extra time to find the right tile to bring your personality out in your new kitchen!
